To apply for Social Security benefits, you need to apply to the Social Security Administration 3 months before reaching the age of 62 by completing a questionnaire. You can also postpone receiving your benefits until later on in life if you so desire. Receiving Social Security at age 62 depends on what year you were born. Check with the Social Security Administration to see when you qualify.
All you need to do is visit a local branch of the Bangkok Bank where you plan to retire in Thailand. Or, if you are in Bangkok, head for the main branch on Silom Road.
Fill out a direct deposit form and indicate you want the funds deposited in the Bangkok Bank branch office in New York.

If you would like your check to be direct deposited into a bank account in Thailand, you need to contact Bangkok Bank. This is the only Thai bank in which Social Security payments can be direct deposited. Their address is:

This also applies to any other pension from the United States Government including military and civil service. I will have a total of three checks going to the Bangkok Bank in New York once I hit age 62.
There is only one catch – and for some, it could be a big one. This is a direct deposit account. You cannot get an ATM card to make withdrawals. You have to physically go to the bank monthly to withdraw your funds. This is to prevent anyone from accessing your funds after you are deceased.
You can get a second account at the Bangkok bank, or any other bank in Thailand, and re-deposit the funds and access them with your ATM card.
If you already receive Social Security or other federal benefits in the United States, and you intend to move to Thailand, please notify the Social Security Administration or other federal agency of your change of address. Your benefits will then be sent to your new address. Contact the Consular Section to advise them of your residence in Thailand and inquire about the procedures for having your benefit checks sent overseas or deposited directly into your account.
